With insights from staff and patients alike, we designed a hospital that feels more like a home away from home
Magee-Women's Hospital and Stantec applied evidence-based design principles to enhance the overall experience of any person that walks through UPMC doors. Gathering insight from not only hospital staff, but also with patients, former patients and their family members, we were able to creatively bring elements of home to the healing environment.
Technology blended with natural light, spa-like materials, and soothing colors create a therapeutic environment for patients and family. The 39,785-square-foot addition provides a 14-bed ICU on the 4th floor and a 28-bed Gynecological Medical/Surgical nursing unit on the 5th floor, increasing the Hospital’s overall bed capacity by 13 percent. Nursing stations were decentralized allowing close proximity for care to patients, including the integration of nurse server alcoves adjacent to each patient room for supplies and charting. The Magee-Women's Hospital is ever conscious of their impact on the community and environment, and so we integrated sustainable solutions and infection control principles, which led to LEED® Silver Certification by incorporating practices from the Green Guide for Healthcare.
