Celebrating millennial culture and collaborative working

From their humble beginning in 2010 based in an old mechanic’s garage, Mapbox sought to create an East Coast Headquarters that represents their growth as the leading location data platform for mobile and web applications. In searching for their ideal office, Mapbox selected a historic building on Washington’s 15th Street.

Originally built in 1906, we incorporated many of the building’s original finishes into the design—this includes terrazzo and mosaic tile floors, exposed brick walls, and hand-riveted steel columns. The firm desired a space that celebrates their work culture and supports a collaborative work style. To answer this, we designed a 17,000 square foot, 100% open workspace that offers staff a multitude of work environments.

Aligning with their informal culture, there’s no reception desk. Instead, visitors are greeted by a lounge reminiscent of a living room. Collaboration spaces range from informal to formal, and can hold up to twelve participants. Gathering spaces are intertwined with work areas, which feature sit-to-stand desking and are flooded with natural daylight, and a large café space doubles as an all-staff meeting space and features various kinds of seating.

Now completed, Mapbox has an office that can support the innovation and creativity of their talented staff.
