Designing a facility to provide site information for tourists visiting Navy Pier
Navy Pier is Illinois’ largest tourist destination, spanning over a million square feet in size and incorporating several attractions and amusements for people of all ages. The Chicago Children’s Museum, an IMAX theatre, and a conference center—the Pier plays host to a wide range of functions year-round.
Our team was brought on to design and develop a 3,700-square-foot space to be known as Market Place at Navy Pier. The facility would provide site information for tourists, as well as retail merchandising and food. We would include individual display pavilions to embrace significant styles of Chicago architecture, and we used artwork from Chicago’s Gallery 37 to showcase the city’s creative talent.
A map of Illinois, a Chicago city grid, a compass, ears of corn, and the state bird of Illinois (a Cardinal) emblazon the store as a representation of Chicago culture. We installed a projection screen to provide continuous information, and our strategic set-up will support several types of waterfront entertainment for another hundred years to come.
