Maryland Military & Community Compatibility Website and Companion Handbook

Military installations are among Maryland’s strongest, most valuable assets and are critical to its economic growth. Twenty military facilities and installations provide Maryland a $61.4 billion economic contribution made possible through strong community support. With an understanding that community strategies for growth and expansion must respect the needs of both the military and surrounding communities, the Maryland Department of Planning engaged us to develop a website and handbook to help guide planning strategies and communication.

We developed website tools that represent a compilation of best practices and success stories from across the nation including guides, legislative options, land use planning practices, and an interactive compatibility review mapping tool. The website and complimentary handbook provide guidance for state and local governments, military, private sector, and the general public to understand the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities facing both installations and defense communities across Maryland.

The Military & Community Compatibility Website and Companion Handbook provide valuable tools to foster communication, coordination, and smart planning among the military installations and surrounding communities.
