Massachusetts Offshore Wind Facilities

In support of Federal and State climate objectives, AVANGRID is building three offshore wind facilities that are part of the most ambitious renewable energy project the American Northeast has ever seen: Massachusetts has set a goal to reduce its dependence on fossil-based energy sources and lower carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, and Connecticut’s goal is for 100% carbon-free power by 2040.

Our team has supported these three wind projects since mid-2017. Services included supporting project development and permitting both onshore and near-shore, as well as development of conceptual designs for the subsea cable landfalls, underground electrical transmission including highway and river crossing, geotechnical consulting, and the onshore substation. The first project, Vineyard Wind 1, will be the first utility-scale, operational windfarm in the US and will consist of 62 wind turbines and generate 800MW of electricity annually and power over 400,000 homes. The second project, the 800MW Park City Wind Project, is in the permitting/pre-construction phase and, when complete, will help support Connecticut’s clean energy goal by generating approximately 14% of the state’s electricity supply. The third project, the 1232MW Commonwealth Wind Project, is in development.

All three projects will produce 2.8 gigawatts of clean electricity once operational—enough to power approximately 1,750,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost three million tons per year.
