Stantec partnered with a local college to engage and teach students while completing a stream restoration project

We worked with Randolph-Macon College (R-MC) students and the Town of Ashland to restore the Mechumps Creek Corridor, which has been greatly affected by nearby urban development and bacterial impairment. Students at R-MC got hands on experience from design to implementation during the restoration of the headwater portion.

Following the initial period of study, which included geomorphic, biological and chemical surveys, they learned that Mechumps Creek reflected multiple impairments that included e. coli bacteria, channel instability and sedimentation, and severely degraded aquatic habitat. Engaging with the students, we provided the Phase I restoration design and construction oversight that included approximately 1,200LF of channel restoration. Post construction, more than 30 volunteers from the College, Town, Stantec, and local community participated in planting along the repaired stream channel. Students in R-MC environmental studies classes (in conjunction with Stantec) are monitoring physical, chemical, and biological conditions until 2020.

Phase II is now underway thanks to over $400,000 in grants from NFWF and the VA DEQ and will incorporate regenerative stormwater wetland conveyance techniques to strategically reduce urban bacterial concentrations in Mechumps Creek.
