A historic park restoration designed with the community and environment in mind

Built in 1942, Miller Park provides a 40-acre (16.2-hectare) green refuge within the historic Ardmore neighborhood. The urban park also serves as a stopover habitat for songbirds during migration and is part of the North Carolina Birding Trail. To help address several decades of disrepair to park trails and historic footbridges and stream channel erosion, the City of Winston-Salem engaged our team to design significant improvements for the park.

We prioritized public workshops and focused on restoring the stream and natural habitat for the threatened yellow-crowned night heron. Working closely with the Audubon Society, we removed invasive plant species, reintroduced native plant species, and restored stream bed freshwater crustaceans.

We also replaced trails and footbridges while maintaining the historic arch and stone look. In addition to restoring the step pool stream, we created a steppingstone structure to encourage interaction between the park’s many children and the spring-fed stream. Other improvements included petanqué courts, restrooms, and timber retaining walls.

Upgrades and restoration efforts for this local gem have helped preserve the park for visitors—both human and wildlife—to enjoy for years to come.
