Innovation in transportation planning has allowed us to shed light on the travel patterns of Monmouth County’s population
Monmouth County did not understand where visitation in the county was originating from and wanted to evaluate how its most popular destinations compared. Understanding population travel patterns to solve congestion problems was essential, so the County embarked on a plan to study travel demand and recommend solutions.
Stantec was retained by the Division of Planning to develop a Travel Demand Model (TDM) using big data and technology new to Monmouth. We used several location-based services data vendors to identify destinations most visited in the summer and conducted a detailed travel analysis. Using aggregated GPS point files, we created animations of the population movements along various travel routes to seven hot spots. Recommendations were presented in a deck of cards format with travel demand strategies developed for each of the seven destinations. We then facilitated two training sessions to Monmouth County staff, which provided a comprehensive hands-on demonstration of the model execution process, support applications, and case studies.
Our analyses received tremendous support and our TDM recommendations have been complemented by the County and the New Jersey Transportation Planning Department. The community is pleased and excited to embark on these improvements.
