Improving road safety by reconstructing a 1.5 mile causeway in Boston
We designed the reconstruction of the 1.5 mile causeway, improving safety through the addition of shoulders, drainage improvements, seawall and revetment repairs, and the reconstruction of the internal circulation roadways. New decorative lighting and roadside safety elements bring the road closer to a parkway standard.
Improvements also protected the sensitive ecology. A 1,300 car parking area along the beach was reconfigured to eliminate pedestrian-auto conflicts and an access walk was created adjacent to the parking to enable beachgoers to more efficiently cross the dunes. To protect the natural dunes from damage, access is restricted to 15 designated boardwalk crossings, and the dunes at other points are protected. At the southern end, where storm surge was frequent, we removed parking and created a dune enhancement area.
We also reconfigured the main entrance and exit roadways to address confusing circulation patterns, poor layout, and a lack of character. Key elements here included a new left turn lane providing individual access to both the reservation and Wilson Road, an improved exit creating better and safer alignment, and enhanced pedestrian and landscape areas.
