New Brighton is a vibrant, attractive suburban community on the north side of Minnesota’s Twin Cities with natural beauty, a robust economy, and well-developed infrastructure. As a fully developed first-ring suburb, New Brighton offers a broad mix of housing types. But it faces challenges associated with its aging single-family homes and a concentration of 1960s-era apartment buildings. Looking to provide new, multifamily housing, particularly with affordable options for people in the community and workforce, the City of New Brighton engaged us to help.
We conducted a housing study to develop a detailed understanding of existing housing options. Our team investigated the city’s demographic analysis and housing inventory across a broad range of housing formats and affordability levels, as well as market demand indicators. We explored and recommended housing strategies that would contribute to renewing the City’s housing stock and create additional affordable housing units in strategic locations as part of new market rate housing development projects. These strategies would also increase housing options through accessory dwelling units and foster the production of new senior housing. In conducting structured interviews, we worked with developers familiar with New Brighton to understand the viability of different housing formats and how to improve development outcomes.
Grounded by studies that help New Brighton with affordable housing options, the City is on its way to providing options for families to find homes in a community they can grow and thrive in.
