A first-of-its-kind aerial station in the Valley Metro system
Our client had a vision for the Valley Metro System in Phoenix. They wanted to extend the light rail transit (LRT) service area from the previous terminus at Dunlap Avenue and 19th Avenue to Metrocenter on the western side of Interstate 17 (I-17). We provided civil and utility engineering, systems integration and coordination, and Buy America compliance for the Northwest LRT Extension Phase II portion of the original 20 mile (32 kilometre), US$197-million light rail starter line.
The project comprises three stations—a center platform on Dunlap Avenue, a side platform on 25th Avenue, and an aerial station at the project terminus at Metrocenter. This aerial station is the first of its kind in the system. A park and ride and transit center, improvements to two existing bridges, a new bridge over I-17, paved trackwork, traction power substation sites, signals interlocking and crossovers, drainage, and signals and communications were part of the project.
We also faced challenges during construction such as the demolition and removal of existing and installation of new utilities. Our goal for this challenge was to upgrade utilities while keeping vehicles moving and pedestrians safe in this high traffic area.
