NVTA Operations and Maintenance Facility and Electric Bus Infrastructure

To meet the community’s transit needs and achieve 100 percent zero emission bus service by 2040, Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) set out to expand their transit fleet. The challenge? Their existing operations and maintenance facility wasn’t equipped to handle future demands, so they brought us in to design a new one.

The new facility includes an operations building for more than 100 operators, a maintenance building with six bays, and a vehicle wash to serve a future fleet of over 80 transit vehicles. The facility also serves as a regional meeting facility for NVTA, providing meeting and collaboration space for the communities they serve.

In support of NVTA’s desire to attain net zero energy, we incorporated a microgrid and extensive photovoltaics to support both the buildings’ power needs and partially offset some of the electric vehicle charging demands. To enhance solar potential, we developed a rooftop solar layout and a site plan that allowed for solar canopy installation to be phased and constructed separately.

The new high-performing facility is ready to handle NVTA’s busy transit system and will help secure a more environmentally friendly future for Napa Valley.
