Ocean County Route 571 at Francis Mills

At first glance, County Route 571 looked the same as any other roadway in any other town. But after a closer inspection of its complex geometry and curves, its location—nestled within a large wetlands area, nature preserve, and flood plain—and its functionally-obsolete bridge, it was clear to our team that improving this roadway would require a careful and thoughtful design.

Our improvements eliminated the severe roadway curvature, while realigning and widening the lanes and shoulders to improve motorist, pedestrian, and bicyclist safety. This enhancement, along with our successful acquisition of a design exception, saved a third of an acre of wetlands from potential impacts and preserved the integrity of this environmentally sensitive area. Additionally, our design and replacement of the County Route 571 Bridge eliminated the fear that the scour-critical structure would be damaged or lost in a storm.

Thanks to our good-old-fashioned engineering skills and our understanding that the County Route 571 corridor is the epicenter of the comings and goings of commuters, residents, and travelers alike, this otherwise ordinary project was regarded by the client and its users as noteworthy for its successes.
