This roadway, which serves as a major connector to Ocean City and Sea Isle City in Cape May, was one of many along the Jersey shore that saw the surge from Super Storm Sandy flow over the banks and onto the roadway. Following efforts by the county to complete interim repairs to get the roadway open, our team was asked to design more permanent repairs on a fast track basis.
Our initial work included the preparation of detailed damage inspection reports outlining emergency and permanent repairs, as well as all required Federal Highway Administration and Federal Emergency Management Agency applications for funding. The most urgent components were to complete the shoreline protection design, which included sand and vegetative covered riprap revetment, slope protection, emergency sheeting, endangered species fencing, and beach regrading. We developed two shore protection design alternatives that resulted in the selection of the sand and vegetative covered rip rap revetment. Our design work included repairs to the roadway, parking areas, electrical system repairs and parking lot lighting. This project also included work to secure the necessary U.S. Army Corps of Engineers nationwide permit and state approvals.
