Multidisciplinary services support brownfield assessment

    Pasco County, Florida

Helping secure EPA Brownfields Coalition Grants to assess sites and work with communities to develop them for new uses.

As environmental and land use regulations have evolved, areas now called brownfields are eligible for grant funding for remediation. Since 2015, we’ve assisted Pasco County, Florida, in securing $600,000 in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Grants. The County previously received a $1 million EPA Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant. Empowered with funding, Pasco County has undertaken to conduct site-specific assessments and site inventories, develop clean-up plans, conduct public health monitoring, and support community outreach programs.

Along with grant application assistance, we’re playing an important role in a range of activities including Phase I/II environmental assessment, site characterization, brownfields programmatic support, community outreach, and redevelopment services. These activities deploy our multidisciplinary teams with expertise in areas such as permitting, civil engineering, environmental assessment, geospatial and GIS technologies, geotechnical, and, on occasion, archeology.

We have to date assisted the County with characterization in seven locations. Upon remediation, these sites may be redeveloped for a wide variety of uses including residential developments, retail complexes, parks, commercial centers, and sports fields, to name a few. Others may be restored to their natural state offering additional recreational opportunities.
