Peace River Reservoir No. 2

Water supply in Florida is transitioning from groundwater to alternative supplies due to limited availability and anticipated population growth. Seasonal flows were causing problems for the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority (Authority), and their treatment plant had been idle for up to 8 months a year. Relying on the existing in-ground reservoir, aquifer storage, and recovery wells for supply presented potential shortfalls in delivery of treated water to customers.

Stantec designed an above-grade, off-stream reservoir to provide raw water storage from the Peace River on an 800-acre site with a subsurface slurry wall up to 60 feet deep. The engineered earthen embankment is approximately four miles long with an average height of 35 feet above grade. Our design incorporated extensive hydrology/meteorology and geotechnical investigations. We optimized the geometry to minimize impacts to surrounding wetlands and reduced construction costs by 30%. The design also includes a variable crest gate to provide additional seasonal storage of raw water when available.

The Authority now has a near uninterrupted water supply and can maximize river diversions while operating the treatment plant at full capacity year-round.
