Providing solutions for cultural, religious, aesthetic, and technical challenges in Oman

In Oman, our client was looking to create a groundbreaking cancer treatment facility. Our job? Provide solutions for cultural, religious, aesthetic, and technical challenges—collaborating to create a world-class facility, and the first of its kind in the Middle East.

The new 110,000 square foot facility, with highly advanced cancer treatment technology, is comprised of two buildings: an 80,000 square foot cancer treatment center (with two proton gantries and two photon gantries) and a PET/imaging center. Between the two, a 100-seat auditorium is set on an outdoor pedestrian plaza. A pedestrian bridge links the plaza to accommodations and services for patients and staff.

Unfortunately, the region lacked the infrastructure to produce the radioisotopes needed for proton therapy, so that meant we had to design our PET center to produce them. Additionally, to respect cultural and religious needs (complicated by the high cost of treatment rooms), we provided gender-specific, pre-treatment areas and multi-gender treatment rooms.

Traditional Arabic architecture was incorporated to create a healing and peaceful environment, integrating gardens and fountains, and locating public spaces, including prayer rooms, at ground level, facing west toward Mecca. As a hub of sophisticated cancer treatment, this new center will provide training for other future centers.
