Reducing capital and operating costs with thoughtful design

The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) Sky Train Maintenance and Storage Facility is the main support facility for PHX Sky Train Automated People Mover. A vital part of the airport transportation system, the people mover links park and ride areas and light rail stops to each airport terminal and the rental car center, and keeping it maintained through a designated facility is crucial.

Providing an efficient, sustainable design for the facility’s building in Phoenix’s desert climate, we designed areas for maintenance, parts and equipment storage, main power supply, administration and shop space, and control center. High, solid-concrete, tilt-wall panels on the east and west facades of the building help shield occupants from harsh, direct sunlight and protect occupant comfort during the summer months. Glazing on the north and south facades gives priority to the north facing entry court—the large entry-canopy shades the north facing glass and welcomes visitor and staff as they approach the building. The canopy also creates a comfortable shaded environment for exterior break areas. North- and south- facing clerestory windows, in tandem with large roof-mounted skylights, provide ample daylighting into the high-bay maintenance area.

Our thoughtful design is efficient and functional, contributing to employee health and wellbeing by using appropriate materials that respond to the desert environment.
