Reclamation of an old mine pit benefits a mountain community

On the eastern foothill slope of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s famous tall peaks known as the 14ers, the Pikeview Quarry is being transformed to a recreational area for the Colorado Springs community. With close proximity to town and spectacular views, the post-closure landform created an opportunity to provide open space for a mountain bike park and recreational community center—by stabilizing the pit high wall to reclaim the old mine site.

Our team stepped in to manage the entire reclamation process from start to finish, through permitting, engineering, supply chain support, project management, construction management, and even through the revegetation process. Our engineers performed geotechnical investigations, engineering design to develop slope stability measures consisting of a rock buttress and transferring the mine into an open space park. With such a high-profile project in the community, our team is navigating multi-stakeholder involvement with the public, the mine owner, the Forest Service, and the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety. Ultimately, 3.4 million cubic yards of material, primarily sourced from the mine, will be used to stabilize the mine high wall that had failed near the end of the mine’s life.

With a focus on restoring the natural environment, our team’s commitment to the community and safety is driving this project forward.
