Reducing emissions to protect the environment

To comply with federal regulations, we converted Domtar’s Power Boiler Unit 5 at their Port Huron facility to a cleaner fuel source: natural gas. The unit was formerly operating on coal, and changes needed to be made to update the system with minimal downtime.

On this project, our primary challenge was to develop design documentation for the installation of the new fuel system that minimized boiler down time and the production of steam to be used in other process areas of the facility. We provided electrical engineering and design support for the installation of the new burners, fuel control skids and, control systems for the safe firing of the new fuel sources.

The result? Through quick, constant, and concise communication, this project was a success. We were able to provide a design package that met project objects for emissions, while minimizing boiler down time, and the reduction in emissions pollutants will have a direct benefit on the environment for years to come.
