Providing direct access between the seaport and highways I-395 and I-95 in Miami
Nearly 16,000 vehicles traveled to and from the PortMiami through busy downtown streets each day. Existing truck and bus routes restricted the Port's ability to grow, drove up costs for users, and presented safety hazards. By connecting SR A1A/MacArthur Causeway to Dodge Island, the PortMiami Tunnel provides direct access between the seaport and highways I-395 and I-95.
As a key member of the FDOT owners representative team, Stantec served as the lead for public information and outreach during construction of this $1.2 billion P3 project. Our services ranged from oversight of the concessionaire/contractor, community outreach, and interagency coordination to media relations and maintenance of traffic coordination. We also helped organize events, a visit from President Obama, and university and media tours.
During the O&M phase, we are providing oversight services for the concessionaire's Customer Relations Unit, which distributes information regarding operation, closures, and other related items to the public. This includes monitoring compliance of response times and data accuracy of all telephone and email complaints/requests, review of the website, approval of lane closures, and updating the team on all events that may cause traffic impacts. We are also overseeing the ITS and communication systems.
The project consisted of three components: a tunnel under the Government Cut shipping lane, roadway work on Dodge and Watson Islands, and MacArthur Causeway Bridge widening. Two parallel tunnels (4,200 feet long and 39 feet wide) travel up to 120 feet below Biscayne Bay.
