Promoting community resilience through affordable mass transit networks
Strong social networks help connect people during disasters and throughout recovery. To help these networks grow, we look for ways to truly bring people together with resilient community planning work. How? Affordable, well-connected mass transit.
We helped the City of Poughkeepsie, New York, create a plan to boost economic activity along its waterfront by capitalizing on a busy train station nearby. Our community development team worked closely with the city and residents to help align their goals. This led to the development of a mixed-use urban plan highlighting an easy walk to the train.
Because parts of the waterfront are located within a designated Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood zone, we recommended developing the area at a higher elevation, preserving park space along the waterfront. Should a flood occur, water will be guided through natural plantings, grassy areas, and biofilters.
We're better together
