Modernizing aging infrastructure to better serve the electrical needs of ships at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard

Working with an older system can be a challenge. There comes a time when new equipment is needed to provide safe, cost effective, and reliable power. That was the case for Drydock 4 and Pier 3 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where many hazards needed to be considered in order to get power to the right place while factoring in surrounding environmental conditions.

This project? Modernizing aging electrical distribution system infrastructure that serves ship-to-shore power and industrial power. We designed seven new electrical substations, three at Pier 3 and four at Drydock 4. The equipment that will be installed includes unit substations, transformers, switch gears and associated feeders, and enclosing service utility galleries to prevent flooding during docking operations. These updates are necessary to increase the amount of power available while cutting ties to the adjacent buildings to give each facility dedicated substations.

Our work considered existing facilities (including verifying existing underground conditions) and planned for routing under piers while factoring in tides and other environmental conditions. When this project is completed, Pier 3 and Drydock 4 will have their own dedicated substations to better serve the electrical needs of ships that come for service.
