Powering up an existing dam
The Red Rock Hydroelectric Project is currently under construction at the existing US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Red Rock Dam on the Des Moines River near Pella, Iowa.
For this project, we are serving as the owner’s engineer and designer of record for the new hydroelectric project that the Missouri River Energy Services is developing at the existing Red Rock Dam. The 110-ft-high dam was originally constructed by the USACE in the 1960s for flood control and recreation purposes. The composite earthfill and concrete gravity dam has an overall length of 6,260 ft, including a concrete gravity section housing a gated concrete overflow spillway and 14 bottom outlet conduits.
The new powerhouse we designed will feature two identical vertical Kaplan turbine-generators rated at 28 MW each. During a conceptual project review, our team evaluated the layout the original developer had included in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license application. Based on this review, we revised the layout to address constructability issues and improve project performance.
