RGRTA - Campus Improvement Engineering Study
The Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority’s (RGRTA) East Main St. Campus, home to service, maintenance, and administrative functions, had become an obstacle to efficient bus service. The 1960s buildings were outdated, and the site was too tight for today’s operations. To address these issues, we identified current and future needs and developed a creative plan to achieve operational improvements along with cost and energy efficiencies.
We analyzed current conditions, including site circulation, parking patterns, functions of existing buildings, and energy use. In addition to high energy use, we saw busses being jockeyed around, often with extra labor, adding to RGRTA expenses and inefficiencies. We developed a plan for improvements—and understanding the budgetary constraints—helped write a grant for federal funding. Numerous meetings with operations, administrative, and service staff gave us a wish list for the future.
Along with achieving community buy-in, creative phasing enabled us to overcome the biggest challenge: RGRTA being able to construct the new site and building improvements with little disruption to existing operations or impacts to future development.
