Designing a sustainable, LEED-Platinum facility to prove that green technology is practical as well as attainable
Build green, build sustainable. It’s the direction the world wants to go—we want today’s students to be tomorrow’s advocates. At Rochester Institute of Technology, the new Golisano Institute for Sustainability had to support and prove the theory that these methods were solid and attainable.
As designers and civil engineers, we helped put this building on campus. The three- and four-story building uses the land’s natural elevation change to deliver a dramatic entry while showcasing how to adapt to existing conditions. We designed the stormwater management system to conform with NYSDEC regulations and meet LEED criteria.
Practicing what it teaches, the Golisano uses wind energy, geothermal energy, and a fuel cell. The infrastructure handles stormwater management and treatment through diverse techniques: permeable pavements, bio-retention, dry swale, green roof, harvesting, and rate control. For students, this is a building that they’ll learn in and learn from.
