A community comes together to support a visionary plan for a riverside wheel-friendly skatepark
With community in mind, we conducted several public consensus workshops as a basis for a feasibility study for a world class skatepark. The proposed urban park will be ideal for skateboarding, BMX, roller blading, scooters, and bicycling; with seating/viewing areas and pedestrian pathways for less active visitors. It will cater to multi-generational users and be handicap-accessible.
The goal was to develop an overall vision for the skatepark, as well as a detailed concept plan. To do that, we reviewed the proposed park location—under and adjacent to the east side of the Frederick Douglass—Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge, identified and evaluated design issues, created a design program to meet the project goals and objectives, and established an opinion of cost.
In addition to soliciting input from neighborhood groups, we obtained input from numerous stakeholders, including New York State Department of Transportation and utility agencies. Moreover, we conducted three public meetings where we reviewed and revised concept designs in response to the public’s desired functionality and aesthetics for the park.
