Boosting energy-performance by enhancing the building envelope at Rock Ridge High School
Sometimes the best solution is one that’s been done before. Two schools, Rock Ridge High School and Riverside High School, leveraged the benefits of a tried and true design—a school prototype that was first used over 15 years ago, and has been constructed 10 times already.
But education and design have improved in the last 15 years. So although our plans had a solid foundation, we could still make them better.
On the new sites, we boosted energy performance by enhancing the building envelope. The locker rooms, art rooms, and performing arts areas were redesigned for better functionality. We took more natural light opportunities. Several corridors were realigned to improve efficiency and supervision, and the media center and main office were relocated to better service arrivals.
The plans might have been used before, but—customized for Loudoun County—they were the best choice for these schools.
