Reimagining one of Maine’s most iconic roads

Route 1 South Infrastructure Plan

The historic Route 1 corridor in Maine is one of the most scenic roadways in the country, but when development along Route 1 South became disjoined, the Town of Falmouth brought us in to enhance the corridor and plan for future development.

With the promise of updates and additional connections, this portion of Route 1 in Falmouth became rejuvenated. We joined forces with Town staff, project steering committee, the business community, and utility companies to design improvements for all users.

The roadway was improved to accommodate trucking, vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians alike. To create a more authentic feel in the corridor, all overhead utilities were placed in underground vaults and refreshed with historic lighting. To improve livability, we included other streetscaping amenities like street trees and median islands.

Now that construction is complete, users have noted how much more attractive the area is, and businesses are planning future development—just as the Town had hoped.
