Architectural features work to mitigate the harsh desert climate
Las Vegas’ Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada commissioned us to design their Sunset Maintenance Facility.
Our design for the facility is structured as a campus. By using the buildings to imply security around the bus-parking yard, security is increased. Supporting 50 standard-length, 50 double-deck, 100 articulated, and 50 paratransit, the facility also has eight lanes of fueling, four lanes of fare retrieval, four wash facilities, plus maintenance, operations, and administration buildings.
Material, form, and building elements work together to mitigate the harsh desert climate. Inside each building, daylight is controlled with sunshades, louvers, and clerestories. To support sustainability, landscape materials are native to the local environment—and are low maintenance, low water consumers, and drought tolerant.
