Sam Houston State University wanted to create a student-centered facility for their College of Osteopathic medicine. They selected our team to design the home for their new medical school.
We developed a high-performance design that seamlessly integrates instruction, experiential learning, and discovery while setting the stage for future growth on a dedicated health education campus. The 108,000-square-foot (10,034-square-metre) facility houses teaching environments, including a 215-seat teaching theater, as well as flexible learning spaces, a simulation center, and labs for anatomy, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and research. Our design prioritizes adaptability to allow instructional spaces to evolve alongside medical advancements.
Interior spaces are welcoming, with warm, rich materials incorporating wood with the exposed concrete structure. To help develop skills for the people-oriented philosophy of osteopathic care, collaborative spaces with abundant natural light are located throughout the building for teaching, learning, and administrative uses. The main organizing element of the building is a central spine with views of the tree-filled courtyard, bringing a light-filled connection linking all floors.
Additionally, we planned the facility with a focus on student support and wellness. It includes a dedicated floor for student life, which is reinforced by a shared kitchen, living room, and learning commons.
Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine provides medical education, services to the eastern region of Texas, and improves primary care access and workforce needs in the state. The diversity of their cohort prepares graduates also supports culturally sensitive care in rural Texas.
