Reviewing a water budget to determine practical options for plant compliance
One of SAPPI’s plants along the Kennebec River in Maine withdraws about 55MGD, prompting USEPA Region 1 to ask them to review existing information regarding fish species, their life stages, and population estimates in the vicinity of the plant’s cooling water intake structure (CWIS) to determine if they comply with 316(b) standards.
As part of this process, Stantec reviewed the water budget of the plant and determined that it met the requirements to achieve less than 25% cooling water use due to the reuse of cooling water in their manufacturing process. Also during the process we reviewed the facility’s approach velocities of the CWIS traveling water screens to identify and develop an approach for determining impacts to the federally endangered Atlantic salmon (Salmo solar).
