Saudi Basic Industries New Jubail Technology Center (STC-J2)
Saudi Basic Industries (SABIC) engaged our team, alongside an in-kingdom design partner, to develop the conceptual design and front-end engineering design (FEED) for their new technology center (STC-J2). Located adjacent to the existing research center, STC-J2 operates in close collaboration with SABIC’s global network of technology centers, fostering innovation in advanced chemicals research.
The facility supports the development of new chemical technologies, polymer products, and manufacturing processes, including the use of innovative catalysts. It also enables process improvement and optimization studies to enhance efficiency and product quality of industrial and petrochemical plants.
Researchers preferred offices located near their laboratories, with clear sightlines for oversight. To support future adaptability in work styles, we incorporated flexible laboratory planning and fire separation strategies that reduce the need for future demolition and reconstruction. A consistent perimeter air supply allows for independent yet safe operations, while energy recovery systems help reduce overall energy costs.
STC-J2’s laboratory spaces required ventilation systems capable of providing stable, round-the-clock temperature, humidity, and cleanliness. We extended environmental control to adjacent spaces, improving pressurization and overall system stability. Multi-fan array technology provides reliability and redundancy without compromising safety, with modular fan arrays enabling online fan redundancy without downtime.
Designed to LEED Gold standards, STC-J2 brings together offices, laboratories, and shared support spaces to accommodate over 450 managers, scientists, engineers, technicians, and support personnel.
