Bringing a large wind power facility to Ohio

When our client set out to build a large wind power facility, they had some obstacles to overcome first. Before a power project can be built, federal and state laws require a variety of environmental services to be completed to determine the potential environmental and cultural impacts of the power infrastructure—our specialists were there to help.

The study area for this project was approximately 50 square miles and it was expected to generate up to 300 megawatts (MW) of electrical power from up to 176 wind turbines. Our team conducted a desktop review of environmental features, wetland and stream delineations, GIS mapping, habitat evaluations using the Ohio Rapid Assessment Method, and rare, threatened, and endangered presence/absence surveys within the study area in support of the Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need from the Ohio Power Siting Board. Our team also prepared the preconstruction Notices for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ nationwide permitting for access roads and collection lines crossing and/or impacting Waters of the U.S.

After we completed the permitting process, the site was approved for development, and it is currently under construction. When complete, this 250MW wind farm has the potential to generate clean renewable power for more than 60,000 Ohio homes a year.
