Leading a progressive design-build with minimal community disruption
South Boulevard is one of the fastest developing and busiest transportation corridors in Charlotte. Which meant the area needed to improve fire flow capacity, water transmission, and water transmission main connection redundancy. When Charlotte Water called on us to serve as lead designer on this progressive design-build project, we set out to design the installation of 10,000 linear feet (3,048 metres) of 24-inch (61-centimetre) diameter water transmission main as well as a sewer main rehabilitation.
In addition to design, we brought an uncompromising dedication to safety and excellence as well as a goal of regular public outreach and minimal community disruption. For example, in one project phase our team installed the main line, completed testing, made service connections, and gradually activated the installation so the impact on traffic and the public was as unobtrusive as practically possible.
During each phase of the project, we worked closely with project stakeholders as a collaborative team and coordinated extensively with Charlotte Water, Charlotte Department of Transportation, and Charlotte Area Transit System, as well as local developers, businesses, commuters, and residents during planning and design. With this new water transmission main, South Boulevard is better able to support the fire safety and water usage needs of its community.
