Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport Water Reuse Feasibility Study
Southern Nevada recycles nearly all indoor water by returning highly treated wastewater to Lake Mead where it can be used again. This community-wide water reuse program helps Southern Nevada efficiently and sustainably extend its limited water supply.
The planned construction of the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA) in the Ivanpah Valley, located 30 miles (48 kilometres) south of the Las Vegas metro area, would potentially put a strain on this system. The Southern Nevada Water Authority engaged our team to analyze water reuse options specific to the SNSA development.
We explored several options including non-potable reuse (NPR), indirect potable reuse (IPR), and direct potable reuse (DPR), along with the traditional method of returning the highly treated wastewater to Lake Mead. Our study found that potable reuse will provide a reliable water resource option for the SNSA development area. By using a mix of IPR and DPR treatment processes, the system can treat and reuse the same drop of water eight times without needing to take more water from—or return water to—Lake Mead, offering environmental and cost-saving benefits to the community.
Currently under review and pending regulatory approval, this highly treated water resource option will help meet the water needs of the SNSA if implemented.
