The use of precast materials improved project delivery time, material quality, product durability, and work-zone safety.

When Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 6 set out to aid the restoration of the Everglades and Florida Bay through water conveyance increases into the park, we joined the project as bridge and roadway designers to support the replacement of the Tamiami Trail roadway bed with two bridges.

The challenges? Minimizing impacts to the traveling public and environment, a limited right of way, optimizing the span arrangements, and providing a design that would reduce overall construction time. The solution? Our team utilized precast bent caps, minimizing concrete pours and speeding up construction. The first bridge is 7,675 feet (2,339 metres) long, and the second is 4,650 feet (1,417 metres).

This work will allow for the future flow of water from the portion of the Everglades north of Tamiami Trail to the Shark River Slough to the south of the highway, restoring the historic hydrologic flow the southern Everglades.
