Reaching out from the City of St. Petersburg into Tampa Bay, a base pier had been built in 1926, was updated in 1973, and then closed in 2013 to make way for the new St. Pete Pier. Now, this updated, 26-acre (10.5-hectare) pier features a vibrant greenway leading out to an elevated deck looking out over the bay. The pier provides a beautiful space to walk, bike, dine, drink, swim, fish, explore public art, watch a concert, and more.
We provided civil engineering as well as ecological and preliminary marine structural engineering services. Our ecologists informed our team how to avoid and reduce impacts to the marine resources within the project area. The design of the new pier and its modified operational policies provide net environmental enhancements while decreasing impacts on existing ecological resources. The breakwater/reef/spur feature provides an area of calm waters, protecting near-shore seagrass beds, increasing the potential for oyster colonization, and creating essential fish habitats.
Now, everyone can again enjoy the reinvigorated St. Pete Pier. A memorable time spent with family and friends by the blue waters of Tampa Bay and the green parks of downtown St. Peterburg, no matter what they choose to experience.
