Stellata - Phase 1 of Bunker Hill Housing Redevelopment

We have provided architectural and interior design services to bring to life Stellata, the inaugural building in the Bunker Hill Housing Redevelopment project. This landmark structure marks the beginning of a transformative journey to reshape Charlestown into a vibrant, connected neighborhood, where the barriers of the past give way to a community rooted in inclusivity and opportunity.

Stellata is a six-story, mixed-use building that houses 102 public housing rental units. Designed with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency, affordability, and sustainability, this first phase sets the stage for the 14 future buildings that will complete the redevelopment. Achieving Passive House Design Certification, Stellata features a pioneering hybrid structural system of prefabricated light gauge metal framing and mass timber/cross laminated timber (CLT) panels, a cutting-edge approach that reduces both construction time and costs—while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions by 40 percent.

The building integrates highly efficient prefabricated exterior wall systems, alongside all-electric heating and cooling solutions meeting the standards of LEED Gold certification. Looking toward the future, Stellata is designed with provisions for clean energy solutions and battery storage systems, helping the building remain at the forefront of sustainable living.

This project is more than just a new building—it is an essential piece of Boston's 2030 Housing Plan, a pivotal effort to provide inclusive, affordable housing for all residents. Stellata exemplifies our commitment to shaping spaces that reflect and serve the needs of diverse communities, while advancing the broader goal of sustainable urban growth in Boston.
