Sterling Aviation Early College High School

When the Houston Independent School District was ready to replace one of their existing schools, they took the opportunity to really explore new horizons. The Ross Shaw Sterling Aviation High School would include an aviation magnet program to produce the next generation of pilots, mechanics, engineers, and aviation leaders.

Our job was to deliver an aviation-themed design that could serve multiple generations without undue renovations down the road. The learning spaces have a fluid form and function—walls move, visibility is high, and students choose their spaces. The spaces are diverse and student-focused. In the aviation program, the school also offers flight simulators, mechanical and air frame studies, and maintenance education. The combination of core academic courses as well as specialized, career-focused courses helps these students integrate learning and work-world experiences.

Now, with Ross Shaw Sterling Aviation High School, the school district is better able to serve their community, and students with a bent for aviation can gain invaluable early experience in the profession. Sterling will make its nurturing and inspirational environment visible to the community, championing education as a vehicle for success and getting the public involved in their children’s futures.
