Stonington South Pier and Inner Breakwater Renovation

Engaging with the community to create optimal solutions

  • Stonington, Connecticut

Protecting long-term pier resilience and the livelihood of commercial fishermen.

Our team is providing permitting and design for renovations to the town of Stonington’s 180-year-old stone South Pier, which supports the local fishing fleet, and Inner Breakwater.

Over the course of the project, our team conducted underwater and above water inspections and multibeam bathymetric surveys to ascertain the condition of the structures. We also conducted wave and sea level rise evaluations, including two-dimensional modeling. Based on structure and oceanographic conditions, we identified design alternatives and prepared an alternatives analyses for each structure. Alternative analyses took into consideration important factors such as cost, longevity, constructability, aesthetics, and resilience to sea level rise and coastal storms, as well as impacts on pier operations and public access.

Community engagement in this process is vital to its success. We presented the alternatives to town staff, local fishermen, and to the general public to solicit input. This input has been important to identifying the selected alternatives to renovate the two structures.

Our team is proceeding with design and permitting, with the objective of making both renovation projects “shovel ready” for when construction funding is available.
