Expanding healthcare with a revitalized hospital to serve a growing community

Sutter Davis Hospital Expansion

Sutter Health wanted to extend patient care access for the growing community of Davis with a major expansion of the Sutter Davis Hospital—for doctors, nurses, and clinical staff to deliver improved patient care. Sutter Health engaged us to provide architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services.

We designed a single-story wing addition to the hospital that will accommodate a larger department for labor and delivery as well as an expanded emergency department. Now with an 11,000-square-foot (1,022-square-metre) addition that more than doubles its former size, the Family Birth Center accommodates three new rooms for labor, delivery, and recovery as well as two dedicated to special procedure and delivery. The Center also includes three more tubs for the popular water birthing program, four post-partum recovery suites, and five beds for the medical surgical unit—for a total of 35.

Our design also accommodates an expanded and renovated Emergency Department totaling 18,000 square feet (1,672 square metres). With new triage and flex spaces, it now offers 23 areas for treatment. Other program updates include four rooms for behavioral health patients, a negative pressure room for infection control, an inpatient MRI trailer, and a helicopter landing pad.

Additionally, we designed several infrastructure upgrades such as a complete central utility plant overhaul and renovation—with more efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, and expanded water and sewer storage tanks for 72-hour emergency use. We also incorporated electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels, and planting an additional 140 trees around the campus.

Notably, this $70 million project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule. This revitalized hospital can continue to serve Davis residents as well as the greater Yolo community with patient-centered benefits, now and into the future.
