Additional capacity installed without interruption of power and steam to host facility
Sweeney Cogeneration LP is a combined cycle power plant that provides steam to the Phillips Petroleum refinery. When our client needed to increase the plant’s total capacity to meet the new energy demands of the host refinery, they brought us in to design the upgrade. The goal? Increasing the plant’s power generation from 360 to 480 megawatts and steam generation from 2.6 to 3.6 million pph.
The plant originally included three Siemens/Westinghouse 501D combustion turbine generators each coupled with dual-pressure heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). To meet the new demands, we added a fourth combined-cycle unit to the facility.
Through our design and execution, the facility achieved some significant milestones including providing additional power and steam capacity to Phillips Petroleum without any interruption in existing power and steam supplies. This allowed the host to continue operations throughout construction and commissioning of the new unit.
