As a key move in their campus master plan, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Health Education Center (HEC) expands clinical training and unifies simulation in one forward-looking space. Designed to break down silos in health education, the 160,000 square-foot (15,000 square-metre) facility offers advanced learning and instruction. For interprofessional education at every level, learners from medicine, nursing, health professions, and graduate biomedical sciences come together here along with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare employees.
Our team developed flexible classrooms and collaborative study spaces, for an HEC that facilitates team-based active learning. The Simulation Center is a dynamic learning hub that features an operating room and intensive care unit suite, standardized patient suite, and adaptive simulation labs. Drawing on the understanding that these simulation spaces are pivotal for nurturing communication skills for teamwork and collaboration, our planners designed spaces with room to practice a variety of scenarios and accommodate multiple disciplines. Large-scale learning labs are built to facilitate interprofessional team-based instruction, seamlessly blending technology, collaboration, and real-world scenarios. These high-tech spaces are immersive, hands-on environments that fuse training with reality.
With its bold focus on fully shared space, the HEC at UTMB responds to the evolution of patient-centered healthcare. More innovation, more collaboration, more impact—welcome to the next level of medical education!
