The Jefferson High School varsity program boasts a strong football team with athletes who go on to pursue the sport at the college level. Those athletes need a space where they can develop their skills, so the New York City School Construction Authority (NYSCA) engaged our help to upgrade the existing athletic field and provide a larger, updated field house.
Our design team worked closely with the school and the NYSCA to develop a new athletic complex to match the talent and ambitions of the student athletes. We designed the new field house, football field, metal bleachers for more than 1,300 spectators, and updated tennis and handball courts. Combining ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and orange aluminum panels, the field house is an homage to the school’s home team—the Orange Wave. Spectators entering the complex are greeted by a canopied area featuring a sloped statement ceiling with ticket and concession counters and restrooms. The student entrance leads to modernized facilities to better support the level of talent and success of the student-athletes.
This revitalized complex meets the 2019 New York City Green Schools Guide (GSG) Standards. The sustainably designed Thomas Jefferson High School Field House and Athletic Complex will be enjoyed by spectators and athletes alike and bolster the community of East Brooklyn for years to come.
