Tucson International Airport MRO Replacement Hangar

The Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) needed to replace their Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Hangar at Tucson International Airport (TUS) to support the National Guard’s evolving operational needs. They engaged us as part of the team to help.

The project involved replacing an existing hangar to make way for a new entrance roadway that met updated safety criteria. We initially provided conceptual designs and bridging documents. Later, we delivered civil airside, landside, and architectural design services as the project evolved in complexity.

Significant challenges arose during the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including cost escalations and supply chain disruptions. Working closely with the contractor, we accelerated design and procurement, successfully locking in steel prices early and saving TAA approximately $1 million. This proactive approach helped keep the project on track despite volatile market conditions.

The new hangar includes maintenance bays, parts storage, office and training spaces, and full amenities, such as a breakroom and showers. Beyond its technical achievements, the hangar enabled the National Guard’s 162nd Wing to secure their operational footprint, preserving a major employment and training hub in the region.
