Developing a sustainable solution for student housing at the University of Arizona
From ugly asphalt to a place to meet, study, rest, and recharge. Stantec designed two new sustainable campus dormitories that replace parking lots at separate sites on the University of Arizona campus. The two new halls, Árbol de la Vida and Likins Hall, provide more than 1,000 new beds and both sites have earned LEED Platinum certification for sustainability. How did they do this? The sites are designed with low water use native landscaping, recycled and renewable construction materials, and solar power, among other features.
Project scope included renovation of public access spaces adjacent to each site and improving roads and sidewalks within the city rights-of-way. One crucial engineering task was to mitigate existing flooding on campus at one of the new halls. We did this by designing underground storm water detention.
Likins Hall has the highest percentage of handicap accessible accommodations in the state and hosts wheelchair athletic competitions. Just one more way we create solutions for our community.
