UC Berkeley - Michelle Chang Chemistry Lab
As scientific research disciplines merge, research facilities need to adapt with the pace of change. The Michelle Chang Laboratory at the University of California – Berkeley explores novel approaches of mechanistic biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology to address problems in energy and human health. However, the laboratory was rapidly outgrowing the capabilities of its space.
One area of particular concern was the air-handling system of the ageing structure housing the laboratory. Our solution included a new local HVAC system built into the ceiling space of the lab to provide proper ventilation. The broader renovation plan included a more unified and open design. We also removed obstructions from windows to maximize natural light. The area for graduate student workstations was made more secure and common break areas were created to promote interaction among the researchers and students.
The Michelle Chang Laboratory at Lewis Hall joins the Chris Chang Laboratory renovations in Tan Hall as models for how highly functional and accommodating lab space can be created within legacy buildings at UC - Berkeley.
Services for this project were completed by the employees of GL Planning & Design prior to their employment at Stantec.
