Designed with users in mind—and heavily involved in the planning—the UNC Health North Carolina Surgical Hospital showcases an innovative and thoughtful design, redefining the standard for patient care and operational efficiency.
Our design decisions focused on prioritizing safety, optimizing workflows, and improving the patient experience. A pedestrian bridge separates users from traffic, while planning supports full-floor lockdowns and safe visitor egress during emergencies. Extensive user engagement and simulation exercises informed clinical layouts, improving circulation, privacy, and noise control. Exterior shading fins reduce solar heat gain and glare, contributing to comfort and energy performance while reinforcing the building’s high-performing design.
A standout feature is the “on-stage/off-stage” concept, which strategically separates clinical workspaces from patient care areas. This approach enhances privacy, reduces noise, and streamlines workflows, allowing caregivers to focus while creating a calmer healing environment. Another key component of the hospital, the surgical platform, maximizes efficiency with two-sided pre- and post-operative rooms. Validated through Lean design planning, this innovative layout also improves the ratio of recovery rooms per operating room.
A collaborative effort between Stantec and UNC Health, this advanced facility on the Chapel Hill campus integrates leading-edge technology with a human-centered approach, making sure patients and staff benefit from a smarter, more intuitive environment.
