Designing a free-standing research facility to support students by offering an innovative, hands-on experience

The University of Houston wants to support undergraduate and graduate students by enhancing their hands-on experience. But what do you do if you don’t have enough labs?

The Durga D. and Sushila Agrawal Engineering Research Building (previously known as the Multidisciplinary Research & Engineering Building—MREB)  is a free-standing facility, housing many key functions for both the Division of Research and the Cullen College of Engineering.

It comprises proteomic, protemic, and engineering labs as well as a high-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer lab, a multi-dimensional imaging and computation training facility, a visualizing lab, and a server room for the computational center.

This new facility provides immediate relief for other research labs on campus and includes a strategically located, open shell space to allow for future growth opportunities.
